The 11th Southbroom Mixed Classic has come and gone leaving many happy memories!
The Golf Course is as good as it’s ever been. Our Green Keeper Sizwe Mthwethwa and his team from Matkovich Golf have done an incredible job to present a truly wonderful product.
On Friday night all the entrants arrived for tournament registration and were greeted to Ian Stewart & Carrie-Ann’s wonderful music and a delicious lasagne. Many players were very relieved when they woke up on Saturday as it had blown a howling gale on Friday, but on Saturday they were greeted with Sunny skies and almost negligible wind conditions.
After a hearty breakfast on the patio, many gathered around to watch Derek James put on a Clinic. DJ always keeps his coaching methods simple, this is especially helpful when you’re about to tee off for a 36 Hole Tournament.
Derek’s Tips are simple, but fundamental to the golf swing-
1. Grip
2. Wrists
3. Hips, legs & feet
4. Hit the ground
5. Hold a balanced finish
With the calm weather conditions and fantastic course condition, high scoring was to be expected and the players didn’t disappoint! A number of teams shot in the 40’s but 3 teams stood out. Norman & Shirley Jeffery (44 points) and Don Osbourn & Michelle van der Hoek (45 points) played some tremendous golf and made sure they would be in the running for the final round on Sunday. Neither could quite match new Southbroom Members Marcel Janse Van Rensburg & Venessa Thwaites who set the pace with a blistering 47 points.
After a hot day on the course the players were back in the clubhouse, enjoying a Hake Goujon starter and a Fillet steak main followed by the ever-entertaining Winston Smile. The theme for the weekend was ‘Music through the ages’ and so many celebrity lookalikes were seen on the dance floor.
Conditions on Sunday were just as good as Saturday, no wind to speak of and a gentle cloud cover to keep the players cooler than on Saturday. Scoring was again, very competitive with 3 teams all with the high of the day, 42 points. One of those teams, Des & Vash Pillay had a consistent Tournament (40 & 42 points) and fired their way to 82 points overall and a 3rd Place tournament finish. Don & Michelle couldn’t match their Saturday form but managed a good final round 38 points to secure them Second spot with a well-played 83 points overall.
Saturday Leaders Marcel & Vanessa followed their brilliant Saturday performance with a solid 41 points, enough to claim The 2024 Southbroom Mixed Classic on their second year of entering the event!
Deanne Purtell from Realty One Southbroom put together a table decorating competition for the tournament in line with the ‘Music through the Ages’ theme. It was well supported, Vash Pillay was victorious with her 2 stunning tables and Allyson Thomas won Runner Up with her imaginative décor.
