The 34th Southbroom Men’s Classic was once again, a great success. The tournament cannot be had without the players, and 168 men entered from all over the country, some from overseas and all descended on Southbroom to make it a truly special, full event.
As with any tournament hosted in a tropical climate like ours, much of the scoring is dependent on what Mother-Nature dishes up. This year we had a mix of perfect winter days and a couple windy ones, which made for fair scoring.
The golf course was in fantastic condition, as good as it has ever been at this time of the year. A big thank you to Hein, Sizwe and the rest of the Matkovich Golf team for presenting such wonderfully conditioned golf course.
It was a highly competitive Men’s Classic this year, with 3 different leaders during the 4 rounds of golf played.
Monday was a perfect winter’s day, with a negligible North-Easter blowing and the scores showed. Four teams on 44 points and one on 46, but nobody could keep up with early pace-setters, Alex Paulsen & Roger Lawrence who set the pace with 49 points. Play on Monday was followed by a delicious Braai put on by Gavin, Damien and their team along with some great music by Ricky Muso.
Tuesday was a slightly more testing North-Easter, but nowhere near enough to strike fear into the hearts of the players. Another three teams finished the day with 44 points and two teams on 45. None however were able to keep up with Jack Noble & Alan Sutton who had a very eventful round. Alan had a Hole-In-One on the par 3 8th Hole on their way to a score of 47 points and a 1 point outright lead after two days.
Coincidentally, it was the second Hole-In-One in two days on the 8th hole.
Congratulations to Justin Hutcheson who enjoyed one on Monday!
Wednesday, we had a tournament break day. With players free to do what they wanted, some played more golf, some had a well-deserved break and some came down to the range to test out some of the latest equipment available. Thank you to Ryan, Garath & Chris from Titleist, Srixon and Callaway for adding more value to the tournament.
With many of the players refreshed after their break day, they were greeted with a sterner test on Thursday. A fresh South-Westerly wind had picked up and was there to test each and every player. Many of the golfers were undeterred by this latest challenge and the scoring showed it. Four teams had 43 points, another had 45 points but nobody was a match for Ig & Morne Erasmus who shot an incredible 48 points to propel themselves right up the leaderboard.
After the 3rd round they now sat just one point behind the new tournament leaders, Werner Duggan & Thulani Xolo who had been consistent throughout the tournament. On Thursday night Entertainer Winston Smile put on another fantastic show and the players enjoyed a hearty potjie for dinner.
Alan Hall & Gary Purtell beat Kevin Feinberg & Slade Mansfield on the final day with 44 points but had given themselves too much to do on the final day to mount a charge at the tournament win. The final day was always going to be competitive with 4 teams within 3 points of each other but ultimately it came down to the two leading pairs. They matched one another blow for blow and both ended the day with 42 points keeping Werner & Thulani’s narrow one shot lead intact and ultimately doing enough to win the 34th Southbroom Classic! Congratulations Gentlemen
Play was followed by a delicious medley of roasts and music by the smooth Ian King.
