Congratulations Emil Hierhold
Well done to Emil Hiehold who enjoyed many summer months  with his wife Hannalore in Southbroom – fine tuning his golf before heading back to Vienna in April…..

Dear Derek
In May and June I qualified for the Austrian team in the ESGA Masters (European Senior Golfers Association) Team Cup 70+ in Carlsbad, Czech Republic last week – and we won the Cup with a massive lead of 15 points in a field of 22 nations. I was particularly proud because this success was based on the BB results of the first 2 days: together with my partner we shot 46+49 points. For this we even received a second medal for the best individual result in this competition. – see me happily posing with cup and both medals. To a very large extent this is the fruit of your teaching. Probably I should rather say, of your patience.

Thanks, Emil Hierhold

Well done Emil! Great to see all your hard work paying off  DJ

Howard Kelly in the R&A Clubhouse

 South Africans on Tour
Howard Kelly sends his best from Scotland where he is enjoying a bucket list trip with a grand group of guys!
One of the highlights of his trip so far was having a tour of the R&A, where he proudly sported his Southbroom GC Tie and rang the Captain’s bell before enjoying a great round of golf on the Old Course!

Message from Vic Pretorius, Chairman of Greens

Dear Members,

We are that time of the year when the weather is at its best but the golf course struggles with the cooler weather.
However, the fairways and tees are the best they have ever been at this time of year and generally the course is being tidied & cleaned up and is really looking good.

Some of greens, whilst very healthy with a solid root foundation have become infested with poa. The cynodin which has been has been present in our greens for some years, becomes far more visible at this time of year.

Vic Pretorius
Chairman of Greens
Currently an aggressive salt treatment of the greens is being implemented to knock back both the poa and other foreign grasses. In Feb 2018, a chemical to stop to stop the germination of the poa, pre-emergence, will be applied.

Immediately post spring treatment (1st week of September), the large patches of cynodin Will be removed and replaced with sods of new grass. Trees for the future have been planted on the 5th and on the corner of the 10th which will eventually replace the palms which will die within the next +/_10 years.

The bunkers continue to be improved and we are trying to keep them damp to improve both the playability and consistency.
Come summer, our course should be better than ever and one that we can all be proud of!

11th Hole looking more open and clean. Its great that the bridge
sponsored by Nigel & Leslie Matthews a number of years ago -is far more visible

Neatening up!

13 Handicapper adds 26 metres to his #6 Iron
A story, published in Golf Digest, told of a 13 handicapper who added 26 metres with his #6 Iron, after a fitting. You’d be amazed what the combination of shaft, shaft length, lie angle and design can do for your ability to hit solid, and long Iron shots.

The proven impact of Random Practice
¹ One group of baseball hitters practised by first facing a group of fast balls; then moved on to curve-balls; then moved on to knuckle balls. The second group used Random Practice mixing up the different balls. The second group improved their hit rate in play by 57% on average; while the first group only showed a 25% improvement on average.
Let’s make sure that you’re getting the full benefit from the time you spend practising. You’ll hit more good shots.
